Mummification Basics
Purpose
Mummification is a specialized kind of full body bondage. The goal is to immobilize the bottom and impose varying levels of sensory deprivation. At a minimum, the mummification reduces or eliminates most of the body's sense of feeling. If the head is included in the mummification, the senses of sight, hearing and smell can also be reduced or eliminated.
Once mummified the bottom becomes intensely focused on the few sensations that remain, allowing the bottom to drift into a dreamy, meditative state. Unless of course the top chooses to entertain himself by stimulating the bottom in various ways. To the bottom, the effects are more intense since there is reduced competing sensory input.
Mummification can be done using many materials. You can encase the bottom using: rope, bandages (Ace Bandages or any other kind of medical bandages), vet wrap (a self adhering bandage used mainly for wrapping the legs of horses or other animals. It only sticks to itself so it perfect for mummification. Comes in many colors), cloth, latex strips (Latex, rubber or other materials that are elastic and in the shape of bands. You wrap the bands around the body and tuck the end of the bands into previous wraps), leather strips, spandex, tape, plastic wrap, plaster (medical cast material can be bought to make casts. It is expensive, and be aware that the material may heat up enough to burn skin when curing) or custom designed fetish equipment such as sleep sacks and inflatable body tubes. In short you can use pretty much anything that will stick to itself and you can wrap around a person.
You can mummify a person in many positions, and to many things. There is the traditional Egyptian mummification position, with a number of placements for the arms. You can mummify the bottom alone, or to a support column (fixed, or free). You can do free-standing mummification, encasing the body and limbs, but not securing the limbs so the bottom can be moved around or posed. You can mummify the bottom into a ball, or in chicken wing and frog leg positions. You can mummify two people together, not just torso to torso (in many variations), but securing them together only at selected locations.
Basic plastic wrap mummification is one of the easiest and safest types of bondage. It can take from about 15 minutes to as long as you like. Plastic wrap is cheap and easy to work with, and it comes in several colors. If it tears it is easy just to add a new piece on top.
There are many variants of plastic wrap. There are food wraps like Saran wrap, Reynolds plastic wrap, Glad wrap etc. Saran wrap does not shrink wrap like other brands and clings to itself better. There are also industrial type palette and mover's wraps. They are thicker and stronger than food wrap. Mover's wrap can be bought on a spindle with a handle. The wrap turns on the spindle, so less hand work needed to wrap the bottom. Heat wrap (shrink/thermal wrap) is a form of plastic wrap used for insulation. This is not a wrap to use with mummification beginners (top or bottom). It is very sensitive to heat, and when heat is applied, it constricts and because smaller and stronger. Be very careful using thermal wrap. If you place it on too tight, it can constrict enough to injure. Place it on loosely, so that when it shrinks, it is not dangerous. Some thermal wraps will constrict at body temperature. Warning: Some industrial wraps have bad additives that can cause problems with the skin. Stick to food-grade wrap when in doubt.
I personally use Reynolds plastic wrap. Since it is colored, you can see it better against the skin. This makes any spots that have been missed obvious. This is especially important if you duct tape over the wrap, to avoid placing tape on bare skin.
Note: This is the method I find works best for me. You may encounter tops who use much different techniques.
Materials
- Top
- Bottom
- Assistant: (optional)
- 2-3 rolls of plastic wrap
- 1-2 rolls of tape - variety of material, colors (optional)
- 2 Kleenex or cotton balls, or paper towels (optional)
- A reasonable amount of floor space
- A table to place the bottom on (optional)
- cloth padding for bone on bone contact points
- EMT shears: If done properly, it almost impossible for someone to break out of mummification, so you will have to cut them out with EMT shears. EMT shears are designed to cut through clothes and bandages easily, but have snub blade tips to help prevent cutting into skin. Use your fingers under the wrappings to guide the shears and protect the bottom from accidental damage.
- Blanket
- Towel
- Pillow
Safety and Housekeeping
- Claustrophobia
- If the bottom begins to panic, especially when the head is mummified, comfort and reassure him as you quickly uncover his eyes and remove the head wrappings.
- Falling
-
- An assistant is very handy for keeping the bottom from falling. This is the bottom’s greatest danger. Just having an extra hand helping to maintain balance will let the bottom relax and enjoy the experience.
- Breathing
- Leave both nasal AND mouth passages open to assure no breathing problems. Since the bottom can't move, check often to be sure he does not begin to choke. Never leave the bottom alone.
- Other
- Be prepared to open certain parts of the mummification if the wrapping becomes constrictive, painful, or cuts off circulation. The feet and hands are the most common locations for this type of problem.
Be sure the bottom has urinated if the scene will be long.
Offer water to the bottom periodically to prevent dehydration.
Phase 1: Arms and Legs
First off, do not rush your mummification. Wrapping is a major event, not just a preliminary to a scene. Take your time and enjoy it.
The naked bottom should stand in a location that allows plenty of room for free movement all around. Wrap each leg and arm separately, working downward, so that skin never touches skin when finished.
Note that it is easier to run the roll if the wrap going on is between the body and the roll itself. That is the roll would be away from the bottom with the wrap feeding from the underside between the roll and the bottom.
Have the bottom hold one arm out perpendicular to his body. Take a roll of plastic wrap and wrap from the armpit and over the shoulder all the way down to the hand, and allow the wrap to extend beyond the ends of the fingers. The wrap should be tight enough so as not to slip, but not tight enough to hurt, with lots of overlapping. Do not wrap tightly around the fingers. Create a plastic mitten, restricting finger dexterity, but allowing the fingers to move slightly and flex. Then wrap back up the arm to add a second layer. Repeat with the other arm.
Have the bottom spread his legs wide. The assistant, if present, can steady the bottom from the back. Then wrap each leg working down from the groin just like you did with the arms. Wrap the feet, again leaving the toes loose. Again wrap back up to the groin for a second layer.
Phase 2: Chest
Do not simply wrap around the chest itself, but rather, crisscross the chest and shoulders. Have the bottom hold both arms out perpendicular to the body. Lay the wrap from his back diagonally up and over the near shoulder, down across the chest and the far tit, under the armpit and completely across the back and under the other armpit to the front again. Now wrap up across the other tit, and diagonally over the other shoulder. As you start to cover each tit, put a Kleenex or cotton ball there held in place by the wrap. Repeat the wrap, occasionally overlapping the wrappings on the arms at the shoulder and armpit. Repeat until there are no gaps.
Now place the bottom's arms where you would like them to stay. Where you place the bottom's arms will effect what he can do. Over the crotch will let him be able to play with himself, over the chest will let him protect the nipples, or at the side where he can't do much. Or you can position them close to the crotch or tits, but not close enough to do anything. Be aware that some positions may cause more muscle stress and may not work for longer term mummification.
Starting near the shoulders, wrap around the right arm, across the chest, over the left arm and to the center of the upper back. Repeat this 2-3 more times. Keep wrapping around the whole body in a downward spiral with overlap so you get 3-4 layers of wrap on the body. Having the bottom inhale and hold his breath while you wrap his chest allows for breathing room while he is bound. Leave the genitals exposed by twisting the wrap as you pass just above and just below them. Wrap until the entire butt is covered.
If the hands have been placed at the side, wrap each hand snugly to the adjacent thigh about three times, continuing down until the arm wrap that extended below the fingers is also secured. Again remember not to get too tight over the hand itself. The pressure on the small bones will become painful over time and can end the scene prematurely.
Take the roll of wrap and gently put 3-4 layers around the neck, ensuring there are no gaps between the neck and the torso. Do not wrap the head at this time.
Note: you can do this next section without an assistant, but you must be careful that the bottom does not fall. Not only is he trying to maintain his balance, but you will inevitably end up tugging on the tape during this process. Both of you should be aware of this.
Now switch from the wrap to the duct tape. Taping the shoulders is the most time consuming and fussy part of the mummification. Place the assistant at the back, and yourself at the front of the bottom. Cut off a one foot piece of tape and put it horizontally across the front base of the neck running from shoulder to shoulder. You are securing the wrap around the neck to the chest wrapping. Repeat with another strip below this, working down until below shoulder level. Repeat this process at the back of the neck.
Next cut off a two foot long piece of duct tape. Lay it over the shoulder at the base of the neck with one end on the chest, and the other on the back. Take another piece and put it beside the first with a slight overlap. Work out toward the shoulder until you are on the wrap that was originally put on the arms. Repeat this process with the other shoulder.
Now you should be able to wrap the tape horizontally around the bottom's chest starting at the shoulders and working down towards the groin. The shoulders above this first piece of tape should by now already be taped. Hold the roll of tape in your writing hand and the end of the tape in your other hand. Pull the tape off the roll until you have about three feet of tape free. Give the tape a few seconds to shrink because it will stretch a bit as you pull it off the roll. If you put it on directly from the roll, the tape will tighten when applied to the bottom. This can end the scene, sometimes before you have even completed the mummification.
The assistant steadies from the back while you lay the tape across the front, then you switch off and steady the bottom while he tapes the back. Work your way down to the groin, overlapping the tape slightly. You will find that things shift as the bottom moves after the mummification is complete, and the overlap will fill in the spaces. As you cover the tits and the Kleenex, do a quick count of the tape wraps down from the shoulder to locate them later.
Be careful as you tape the groin to not tape over exposed skin and hair. If the hands are at the sides, wrap each hand individually to the thighs, working up into the groin. Finally wrap around the body and hands, until you reach the bottom of the butt.
Phase 3: Legs
Now lay the bottom down. This can either be on the floor or on a platform such as a bondage table, couch, or bed. Steady the bottom while they walk over to where they will lie down. If the final position is the floor carefully help the bottom down onto his knees, and then onto his back. If the final position is a platform, get them to sit on the platform then lay the upper body down on it. Lift the legs and swing the body around so it is fully on the platform. This is where an assistant comes in very handy.
If alone try to prop the bottom's feet up on a stool or something. I have also been able to work with the bottom's feet flat on my chest pushing in for support. Again, the assistant holding the legs up makes the job much easier. Put the legs together, and place the padding between knees, ankles, heels and balls of the feet. Often I use two facecloths, one at the knees and one for the between the feet. This pads those places on the legs where skin over bone is tightly pressing against skin over bone.
Using your plastic wrap, start at the ankles and make two or three overlapping wraps at the ankles to secure the legs. Now work your way up the legs to where you left off with the with plastic wrap that came down from the chest. Again, get a 3-4 layer overlap as you work up.
Now wrap the feet. Do this loosely and gently. You are covering them, not trying to put real pressure on them. You want a loose sock feel, especially around the toes.
Switch back to the duct tape. Pull off a one foot piece and put it over the big toes with one end on the arch of the foot and the other on the top of the foot. Work out towards each little toe until all the toes are covered. Use two small pieces to cover the ends of the little toes. Now you can begin to wrap around both feet horizontally. Again, peel a length of tape off the roll first to minimize pressure. Do not put the tape on snugly until you have passed above the ankles. Then use the same pressure you used on the chest. Continue until you overlap the duct tape from the chest.
Phase 4: Head
Switch back to plastic wrap. Have the bottom lift his head. The assistant can help hold it to reduce neck strain. Run the wrap around the neck loosely to connect with the earlier wrap placed around the neck. Work up the head. When you wrap over the mouth and nose, poke a hole thought the wrap large enough so that both the mouth and nose are exposed and there are no breathing restrictions. Repeat for each wrap over the nose and mouth. To cover the crown, just fold the plastic wrap down, and then make a chin over head wrap to hold it in place.
Go back to the duct tape. Tear off a foot long piece and place it over the center of the head, from just over the eyes, across the top of the head and to the back. Again work outward and down the sides toward the ears. Once this is completed, wrap horizontally, keeping tension to a minimum. Wrap down from above the ears to the base of the neck. Of course you leave the mouth and nose open, being careful not to tape to bare skin there. Loosely cover the neck. You are creating a hood. The bottom should feel it around him, but it should not press tightly, especially on the neck or temples.
Place the pillow under his head if required. You may also have to put padding under the heels.
Phase 5: Play
Remember the cotton balls on the tits? Feel around for them. This is why you counted rows of tape from the shoulders. Once located, use the blunt end of the EMS shears to pick through the tape and wrap until you reach the cotton ball. Cut just enough tape and wrap away so that cotton can be pulled out and the tits are exposed to your tender mercies.
Once mummified, you can let him enjoy the quiet, tantalize him with touches, tickles, or a whipping, or do a mixture of erotic, painful, pleasurable, and interesting tactile effects.
But keep checking on him for safety. Keep a close watch on his body temperature and make sure he doesn't get too hot. Be prepared for muscle cramps, or wrap tightening as it shrinks due to body heat.
How long should you leave the bottom in mummification? It is a very intense experience so with a novice as short a time as 10-15 minutes may be enough. Some experienced players like to be left for hours on end but remember anyone so heavily restrained must be supervised at all times. In any case the subjective passing of time for the bottom will be very different from normal.
Phase 6: Emergence
Too often the ending of a scene is not given the attention it deserves. Unless it is an emergency, unwrap slowly and make it as erotic and sensual as you can.
Normally I start cutting open just above the ankles, where there is a gap between the legs. I gently poke the blunt end of the EMS shears through and enlarge the opening so I can put a finger on each side of the blade, extending out past the end. This guides the blade and protects the bottom from being cut. I then run the blade toward the toes in the crevice between the feet. Then I reverse and follow the legs up to the opening at the groin. Don't peel back the coverings at this point. Drape the towel over the opening to reduce the air flow.
Now carefully poke a hole through the wrap just above one wrist. Again cut down to the fingers, and then across just below the tips of the fingers. Then reverse the shears and cut up to the armpit along the opening between the arm and the body. Repeat with the other arm. Have the bottom stay still after the arms are released.
Follow the cut from the second armpit up over the collar bone and up to the side of the neck. Follow up just under the jaw and pass in front of the ear, thus avoiding the possibility of cutting it, and on up to the crown.
Now you can open the layers to reveal the sweating bottom inside. Have a towel handy. There's no doubt that mummification produces a lot of sweat. Once the cocoon is cut off, you'll find the bottom was floating in more ways than one. Wrap him in a blanket to keep him warm. Quickly wipe off most of the sweat and cover with the blanket to prevent chills.
You still have to cut open the wrapping on each arm and leg. Carefully follow the same procedure as before. You will find the wrapping is tighter and you have to work more carefully to get the blade under the wrap and run it along without cutting the bottom. You will also find the wrap has stuck to the skin. As each limb emerges, peel it clean of wrap, wipe it and cover it.
Provide lots of aftercare. Hold him, hug him, and gently talk him back to earth. Some people get very relaxed and sleepy - some have even fallen asleep while wearing it, so bear this in mind if you're planning a number of activities. Have water on hand for him to drink.
A bottom's headspace is not quite the same after being released from a good mummification as it was going in, and a good top will use this fact to his advantage -- and of course to create an intense experience for the bottom.
